Overview
Above the village of Yeghegis the mountains hold stories from centuries ago. This hike takes us into those hills, where nature and history meet in a beautiful and powerful way.Our path slowly climbs through open landscapes of the Vayots Dzor region. The higher we go, the wider the views become – valleys, ridges, and endless Armenian skies.Soon the dramatic silhouette of Smbataberd Fortress appears on the ridge above us. Built more than a thousand years ago, the fortress once protected the valley and the medieval trade routes. Its strong basalt walls follow the shape of the mountain, making it almost impossible to conquer. Standing there today, surrounded by wind and silence, you can feel the strength of this place. From the fortress we continue our journey through highland landscapes to reach the hidden monastery of Tsaghats Kar Monastery. This ancient monastic complex, built in the 10th century, rests quietly among the hills. Time seems slower here – stone churches, old khachkars, and mountain silence create a peaceful atmosphere. After the hike we will descend back to the village, where we’ll visit a local place and enjoy a small authentic experience with local people – sharing food, stories, and the warmth of village life.
