Overview

This hike takes us into the rocky and colorful landscapes of the Vayots Dzor region. The trail winds through red cliffs and dry mountain slopes above the deep Gnishik Canyon, with wide views opening along the way. The scenery here feels raw and powerful, shaped by wind, sun, and time. One of the highlights of the hike is the viewpoint overlooking Noravank Monastery. From above, the monastery sits quietly between massive red cliffs, and seeing it from this perspective reveals a completely different side of this famous place.Although the landscape may look dry and rugged, it is full of life. The rocky slopes are home to many plants and animals adapted to this environment. If we are lucky and attentive, we might even spot the wild Bezoar goats moving along the cliffs – one of the most iconic animals of the Armenian mountains. After the hike, we will visit a nearby village and stop at a local place to spend some time together and experience a small piece of local life. Depending on the day, this can take different forms, but it is always a moment to slow down, connect with the place, and enjoy the atmosphere of the village. This hike is relatively short but offers a powerful mix of dramatic canyon views, wildlife, and a meaningful local experience.
