Overview

We start the trip with an off-road drive from Geghard, heading deep into the high volcanic plateau of the Geghama mountains until we reach the walking point near Paytasar mountain. On the way, we pass ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks – mysterious drawings left by people who lived and moved through these mountains thousands of years ago.The hike begins across wide volcanic fields. The landscape here is open and raw, shaped by old volcanic activity – red sandy slopes, dark rocks, and endless mountain views all around. The scenery stays consistent throughout the hike, with the feeling of walking through a vast high-mountain plateau surrounded by the ridges of the Geghama range. In early summer, some patches of snow can still remain on the higher slopes. As we continue the steady climb, the summit of Azhdahak gradually comes closer. From the top of the mountain, the views open widely, and on a clear day you can see Lake Sevan shining in the distance. After reaching the summit and taking a short rest, we descend a little into the crater of the mountain, where a natural crater lake lies. The lake sits quietly inside the volcanic bowl, protected by the surrounding slopes – ice-cold, but very refreshing if you decide to swim. The hike is moderate, with volcanic terrain and steady elevation gain. The combination of ancient petroglyphs, high volcanic landscapes, the crater lake, and the wide views from the summit makes this hike one of the most unique experiences in the Geghama mountains. After the hike, we visit a nearby village where we are welcomed by a local family for tea or homemade food – a chance to rest, share stories, and experience a bit of local village life before returning.
