Overview
This hike takes us to the mountains of Vayots Dzor, starting from the small village of Artavan and leading us to the unusual Hayeli Lake.We begin our hike from the village and slowly leave the houses behind, walking through open fields with wide mountain views. The landscape here feels spacious and calm, with rolling hills and highland pastures stretching around us.Hayeli Lake sits at 2240 meters, quietly surrounded by alpine landscapes. “Hayeli” means
mirror in Armenian, though the lake isn’t a perfectly clear mirror, but from above – from the slopes or from certain angles – its combination of water and vegetation creates shapes that resemble a map of the world. The patterns of greener and browner patches on the lake’s surface remind travelers of continents and oceans seen from a great height – a surprising and humbling sight that makes this place unforgettable. On our way back to the village we take a slightly different path and pass an old cemetery with khachkars – traditional Armenian cross-stones carved into rock. These stones carry centuries of history and are one of the most unique elements of Armenian cultural heritage. After the hike, our experience continues in the village. A local villager will host us at their home, where we will spend some time together, taste local food, and learn more about life in this mountain community.
