Overview
This hike takes us to the summit of Mount Khustup, one of the most powerful and iconic mountains of southern Armenia. Rising to 3201 meters, Khustup stands above the forests and valleys around Kapan and offers some of the most dramatic landscapes in the region. Our journey begins in Kapan. From the city we drive about 12 km off-road through the mountains to reach our camping spot on the slopes of Khustup. Here we set up our tents and spend the evening in the quiet atmosphere of the mountains. The area is surrounded by alpine meadows, fresh mountain air, and wide open views. Spending the night here allows us to experience the mountain slowly and prepare for the climb. Early in the morning we begin our ascent toward the summit. The trail climbs steadily through green alpine fields and rocky mountain terrain. As we gain elevation, the landscape opens wider and wider, revealing the deep valleys and mountain chains of Syunik. Higher on the mountain the terrain becomes more rocky and wild, and the final section requires some effort, but reaching the summit makes it all worth it. From the top we enjoy wide panoramic views across the mountains of southern Armenia, a place where you truly feel the scale and power of nature. After spending some time on the summit and resting, we descend back to our camp. This hike is a real mountain experience – remote landscapes, big elevation gain, a night under the stars, and the rewarding climb to one of Armenia’s most impressive peaks․
